My name is Elliot McCoy, the finance chair for AMA, and I am a sophomore majoring in Supply Chain Management. I am from St. Joseph, Missouri, and I am an outdoor and travel lover. You can find me hiking and backpacking on the weekends, spending time at the lake, playing pickleball, or going on long bike rides. I also play guitar in my spare time. On campus, I am also involved in LSCMA (Logistics & Supply Chain Management Association) as the social media chair. Right now, I don’t have any set plans after graduation, but I am very interested in the logistics industry and how products move. I am hoping to land an internship this summer or next to gain hands-on experience in my potential career field.

My interest in AMA started with one of my good friends and roommate, Rylan Piepergerdes. He asked if I wanted to become more involved on campus and develop my professional and marketing skills. I was hesitant at first, as I am not a marketing-specific major, but I have realized that marketing is applicable to every industry, and joining AMA would make me a better leader and professional. I was soon inspired to run for an executive position to give back to the organization and develop my leadership skills. There was an opening for the VP of Finance position, and I decided it was a position I could be a good fit for.

This position requires me to keep track of our chapter’s expenditures, forms, and fundraising. Also, I get to coordinate with the executive board on budgeting for events. I enjoy my position because it has allowed me to make a behind-the-scenes impact on the organization and be a part of a great and supportive executive board. One of my favorite AMA experiences so far was during marketing week, where we had pumpkin painting on the campus lawn. It was a great time hanging out and connecting with other AMA members, and sharing a good laugh about our painted creations.

AMA has taught me many skills in the brief period I have been a member. It has strengthened my leadership skills, social ability, team collaboration, and budgeting skills. It has been so impactful to me as a professional, especially since being on the executive board. I have developed my scheduling and time management ability, as well as staying on top of my executive duties each week. I look forward to hearing each board member's new ideas on how to advance the chapter and make meaningful improvements. Personally, I have strengthened my network and social skills through AMA, as it has required me to be around a new group of people, most of whom I didn’t know prior.

If you are someone who wants to develop your skills similarly, I strongly recommend being part of AMA. You will create so many new positive friendships and be a part of a community that pushes you to succeed as a professional and as a marketer. My personal advice to any new or future member is to get out there and take chances. I had no idea that AMA could be such an impactful part of my professional journey, and I would not be the person I am today without it. You don’t have to be sure about what your future holds, but you can be sure to gain valuable skills and community through AMA.
